How To Manage Our State As Leaders

Building and scaling a business can feel like a roller-coaster ride. And as leaders everyone is looking to us to be their North Star.

We have to hold the mission front-and-center with extreme clarity despite external circumstances.

And as things pick up … positive momentum builds and the pressure to perform grows even bigger.

Our partners, teams, clients, and bottom lines are counting on us to operate at peak performance and deliver top-notch results every-single-day.

Our spouses, families, communities, and teams are leaning on us emotionally, intellectually, and financially.

It’s a lot of pressure.  Especially when starting and scaling a business is a side hustle.

After all …

We’re human … we’re not perfect … we don’t have infinite energy … we don’t handle each situation flawlessly.  Gulp!  I know that’s not what we want to hear 😉

We don’t have a crystal ball … we can’t predict with 100% accuracy what will happen in the economy, world, and beyond.  Not-to-mention personal crises that might arise.

So, how do we manage our psychology as leaders to continue performing on all levels?

ONE. Laying A Solid Personal Foundation

It starts with us.  Getting our mind, body, and soul right.

This might seem cumbaya BUT building and scaling a business is as much about personal growth as it is sales calls and spreadsheets.

Our bodies give us the energy to get things done.  Our minds formulate the strategies for growth.  Our souls bring us the why behind the what.

Laying a solid foundation might include eating right, exercising, meditating, doing breath-work, journaling, reading, listening to podcasts or music, dancing, watching motivational videos, etc.

Getting ourselves in peak state provides us a deeper layer of resolve and resilience to navigate whatever comes our way.

TWO. Connecting With A Strong Tribe

Now, since we’re human … we know that we’re going to slide out of peak state often.  And when all of our solo tactics fail us, we need a strong tribe to prop us up.

A strong tribe offers us … perspective … a different way of seeing the same challenge.

The intangible support of … I’ve been there. And the tangible support of … this is the way forward.

And the not-so-fun side of calling us out for playing small and the oh-so-fun side of celebrating with us when we win!

Connecting with a strong tribe keeps us pushing forward when we want to hide AND it makes the journey so much more fulfilling.

THREE. Working With A Powerhouse Team

Without a team, we’re just creating a glorified job for ourselves and calling it a business. We don’t want to get trapped there.

So, getting the right people in the right seats and creating a high-trust culture for maximum productivity is key.

From personal experience, when life happens and you can’t be involved in day-to-day operations as you were previously, YET dinner tables are counting on you to perform …

Your powerhouse team will be your life-saver.  Not just tactically but strategically, emotionally, and intellectually.

They’ll think of things you missed, see opportunities you glazed over, and take actions you’re not in a position to take.

To truly scale a business, we must work through people.

FOUR. Taking Extreme Ownership

Taking personal responsibility for how we show up as leaders despite what happens externally builds trust within ourselves and others.

It also puts the decision-making power back in our hands.

That’s a powerful position to be in … we have a strength and resolve that isn’t fleeting with the changing environments.  We’re not waiting on someone or something to chart our course.

We know that no matter what happens … we have a plan of action that is in alignment with our vision, mission and values.

People follow leaders who take ownership and it builds confidence.  And confident people take more action and produce even greater results.

We hope this helps you as a leader as you build and scale your business!
